Chapter Nine

Quan paced the floor and cursed the gods. Tin Hau, the queen of heaven, had not smiled on him since Reese Corbett had come onto the scene. Next, Kwan Kung, the god of war, had not put strength in his own men's swords. They had been badly beaten at the joy house. Ti Kong's face was swollen and discolored. He stood solemnly, not speaking a word since he had informed Quan of the disastrous confrontation with the lawman and his friend.

"Who is this huge wild man, the one called Rusty?"

"He used to be a freight driver, but has been working independently for the past few months. I believe his loyalty to Corbett is due to the man saving him from ambush."

"How are the others?"

"Corbett used a club on Ah Gow, but he will recover."

"When is Mock Doy due back?"

"Perhaps by tomorrow. Do you wish me to prepare an ambush?"

"No, I have something else in mind for him."

"But he has been working behind your back. He -"

Quan held up a fleshy palm. "I think Mock is the man to rid us of Corbett's interference. You get word to him to follow Corbett. If he gets the chance, he is to try and kill him. If not, he is to warn Wyngate of both the lawman and that big bear friend of his."

"I told one of his men up at the tollhouse that a lawman was snooping about. He should be wary of any strangers."

"Good." Quan said. “Then Mock Doy need only figure a way to kill the deputy marshal.”

"What can we do about the girl?"

Quan let out a sigh of resignation. "We can do nothing at the moment. Once Corbett is out of the way, she will be without aid or friendship. We will take her back at that time."

"We can no longer follow the two men while they are in the white part of town," Ti told him. “A Chinese would be conspicuous in that part of the city."

"I have connections," Quan replied. "I will keep track of our friends until they leave town again. When Mock Doy arrives, have him stand ready to follow at once."

"Is this necessary? Do you think Corbett will find out anything?"

"We have been careful, Ti, but there are many eyes and ears along our route. Someone has probably seen the covered wagons that roll at night and wondered about them. Another alert person might have heard some voices, or been curious about the shipments of rice and dried fish to an unknown destination." Quan folded his arms in contemplation. "Our best defense is to be rid of Mr. Corbett and his large friend."

"It will be as you wish," Ti said. “I will find Mock Doy and instruct him. As for Mock meeting his own destiny” – Ti showed a mirthless grin – “I will await your order to settle with him.

Quan nodded. “Yes, Mock will be needed, should there be any suspicions cast against the Chinese population. He will be here to accept the blame.
